Nintendo posts Q1 financial loss

Jul 30, 2010 1 Comment by Gamefreaks

Declining sales of Nintendo DS hardware and software, as well as an unfavorable exchange rate, caused Nintendo to post a rare loss in the first quarter of its 2011 fiscal year.

In all the company lost 25.2 billion yen for the quarter ending June 30, or about US$288.4 million dollars. DS software sales fell from 29.1 million units during last year’s Q1 to 22.4 million, with Pokemon Heart Gold/Soul Silver being the top seller during a quarter that saw fewer significant releases than last year’s.

The company also revealed that Super Mario Galaxy 2 was its top-selling Wii title during the period, pushing 4.09 million units worldwide.

Nintendo’s complete earnings release, for those either invested or just plain curious, is available at Nintendo’s Investor Relations site.
