Review | SingStar Chart Hits
Packed with some of the biggest hits, Sony has put together a compilation featuring a line up of some of the most popular music to date on a Singstar title. So prepare to go solo, team up or go multi-player in party mode.
The seemingly timeless popularity of console karaoke still never ceases to amaze me. Sony made massive in-roads with the first Singstar on PS2, and here we are years later and not an eyebrow raised at yet another title release. But then why should we be surprised? Be it Rockband or a Lips title, everybody loves music in some form or another; bands come and go and each generation has their favourites. Another recent change in worldwide gaming has been the acceptance of consoles into every household, involving all family members. This opened up certain musical genres to an even bigger target audience, hence the rebirth of classics such as The Beatles and Queen.

So with so many available tracks on the Singstore, why is it that discs are still so popular? In essence I believe it is a mixture of many things; apprehension at spending online; laziness (where the average gamer cant be bothered trawling through the selections online); that need to have something tangible in your hands for every hard earned buck spent; and of course the resale value of a disc over that of a download. So Sony and Microsoft must both ask themselves why Apple has done so well on downloadable music if they truly want the profitability of that market. Until that riddle is solved and overcome expect to see many more titles hit the shelves in the future.
In gameplay Chart Hits has not really changed at all; you can expect all the same features from solos to duets, battles and the points system. Singstar titles are more about the tracklist than anything else and the selection here is a good one, including hits from the US, UK and even Aussie. So go on, check out the tracks below and decide if it’s your cup of tea. It certainly is great value for money.
Note that the PS3 title (marked with an *) has five more tracks than the PS2 copy.
