NCSoft’s Superhero-themed MMO has officially gone free to play with the launch of City of Heroes Freedom today.

City of Heroes Freedom will be free-to-play up until level 50 opening up the seminal superhero MMO to a much wider audience.

“We aren’t just flipping a switch and going ‘free-to-play,’” explains executive producer Brian Clayton. “We’re embarking on the biggest content and feature update to City of Heroes in its seven-year history.”

Existing subscribers automatically become VIP players and they get access to the “Signature Story Arcs”, access to VIP-only servers, along with 400 points of in-game currency to build their own custom superhero experience.

“Our fans have come to expect great content and with City of Heroes Freedom we’ve clearly raised the bar by delivering the best gameplay we’ve ever developed, and giving players the choice to truly customise their gaming experience”, said Clayton.
