Crytek and Piranha Games have revealed that MechWarrior Online is being built using Crytek’s CryEngine 3.

The CryEngine 3 was used to power Crytek’s groundbreaking shooter, Crysis 2. Other upcoming games that will use Crytek’s game engine include Sniper: Ghost Warrior, Homefront 2, and the Kinect-focused, Ryse.

“Working with CryEngine is a true pleasure. It is definitely the best choice for us”, said Piranha president Russ Bullock. “Both the character animation pipeline with the procedurally and physics based animations and the destruction system fit our goals perfectly and allow us to develop a truly unique AAA experience based on the award-winning BattleTech Universe.”

While MechWarrior Online may be free-to-play, users will still be able to purchase new gear for their Mech, however Piranha Games has promised that it won’t necessarily give them an unfair advantage in combat.
